  • Maple syrup: Balances the heat and salt with subtle sweetness.

  • Chili garlic sauce or chili flakes: Controls the spice level. Adjust to taste.

  • Cornstarch: Helps the tofu get crispy in the oven.

How to make Spicy Garlicky Sesame Tofu

Ingredients

Dairy-free milk (almond, oat, etc.)

Avocado oil (or melted butter)

1/2 cup

Honey (or cane sugar)

1/2 cup

Large egg

Medium grind cornmeal

3/4 cup

Gluten-free 1:1 flour blend

1 1/4 cups

Baking powder (aluminum-free)

1 Tbsp

Sea salt

½ tsp

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes and place them in a bowl. Toss with cornstarch and oil until evenly coated.

Spread the tofu on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp.

While the tofu bakes, heat a small pan over low heat. Add a little oil, then sauté the garlic for 30–60 seconds until fragrant.

Stir in soy sauce, maple syrup, sesame oil, vinegar, and chili sauce. Simmer gently for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.

Remove the tofu from the oven and transfer it to a bowl. Pour the warm sauce over the tofu and toss to coat evenly.

Finish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve hot.
